About Us

How it all started

Vizovice, Moravian region, Czechoslovakia

Slivovitz aka plum brandy was born in the Moravian region of former Czechoslovakia in the small town of Vizovice in 1812.

Plum trees at first just grew on the roadside, before orchards were planted. But, a tradition was born.

Karl Singer had founded the first distillery but had to sell it to the Pfeiffer brothers in Sudetenland because of the Nazi regime in 1941.

Post-war restitutions meant a great come back for the slivovitz industry. But, at first it was made in homes for personal use, and as a remedy.

Our story

A taste of sunshine in every glass

Monterey Pines General Store Tasting. Pictured distillery owners Ludek and Jakub Pala.

Our journey began when Moravian Sons Distillery founder Ludek Pala started stilling with his father Joseph in the state-owned distilleries. That’s where Ludek learned the craft at a very young age. Plum brandy was also used for bartering during socialism, and to warm up while working outside in winter. Most people butchered a pig before the holidays in December. They drank plum brandy to fend off the cold. Family celebrations would not be complete without the fruit brandy always locally sourced. Most homes had plum and apple orchards.

The custom-made copper still arrived on a ship called Palena in 2021. So the work to perfect the product began. But first we look for local farmers to purchase our fruit. It takes six weeks for the fruit ferment to mature. We do not add sugar only yeast to some of the ferments like the apple cider.

We use Castleton or Stanley plums for making flagship slivovitz aka plum brandy.
